Description
Volunteers of America Texas is a faith based, non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals, families and communities reach their full spiritual, emotional and physical potential and wellbeing through a vast array of services that target the elderly, the intellectually disabled, those striving to overcome substance abuse, and those transitioning from correctional centers.
 
Function:

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides program support and direct care to clients for minor illnesses and injuries and make referrals to other medical professionals and facilities as appropriate.  This can include administering medication, giving shots, updating patient records, providing emotional support, patient education, basic diagnostics, and other patient procedures. The RN participates in ISP planning and monitoring as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides nursing care to people with intellectual and development disabilities in a range of health, welfare and community settings.
  • The RN provides clinical supervision for the LVNs working with the consumers.
  • The RN may come in to check the client at times of illness or injury.
  • Attends meetings with the clients and guardians to discuss the client’s health, mental and otherwise, and contacts the doctor with concerns.
  • RN talks directly to management and program coordinator about any medical services that need to be done.
  • Participates in the initial admission evaluation and treatment plan designed for each client admitted to the program.
  • Performs periodic medication administration review.
  • Participates as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team providing general health counseling, review of medical procedures, medication and medical options with client and family.
  • Provides appropriate in-service training to direct support staff in basic health care and hygiene skills.
  • Helps family and clients with coordination of medical appointments.
  • Conducts in-service training and supervises employees as it relates to the medical care of the client.
  • Completes the following specific on-going tasks:
    • Makes appropriate entries in nursing notes relating to individual client care
    • Reviews medication administration instructions with the family, staff and client.
    • Visits homes as deemed necessary per Individual Treatment Plan to monitor general medical status of residents.
    • Prepares medical summaries and attends staffings as needed.
    • Completes assessments as needed, at least annually on each consumer.
    • Communicates with program director regarding each client’s medical needs, including routine and emergency treatments.
  • The RN should have a working knowledge of community resources and a plan for assessing those resources.
  • Must be available, on-call as scheduled, for nursing consultation and/or treatment of minor illnesses or injuries and render nursing assistant in medical emergencies.
  • Financial:  Within the scope of responsibility, adheres to budget guidelines, including expenditures, billing for services, P-Card documentation, etc.

Other  Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and registration and license (RN) to practice nursing in the state of Texas and one year of experience during the last 36 months. Experience in Home Health or Public Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities desired.
  • Valid Texas Drivers License (Must be received within 30 days of employment) and ability to be insured; valid Vehicle Liability if driving personal vehicle.
